How to choose a Maldives resort

Decide in this order: transfer window, reef expectation, villa type, dining model, atmosphere. Each step removes far more resorts than the next.

Start with your flight times, not the photos

Your arrival and departure times eliminate more resorts than any other factor, because seaplanes fly in daylight only.

Work out whether you land in time for a seaplane. If not, you are choosing between a speedboat resort, a domestic-flight resort, or an overnight in Malé.

Decide how much the reef matters

If snorkelling from the beach is important, filter on verified house reef before anything else. Reef quality cannot be added later.

Resorts without a house reef run boat snorkelling trips instead, which is fine for some travellers and a dealbreaker for others.

Then villa type, then dining

Villa category and meal plan are the two levers with the largest effect on total cost. All-inclusive suits resorts with limited dining variety; half board suits resorts with several venues you actually want to try.

  • Short stay, privacy priority: overwater with pool
  • Family or long stay: beach villa, family-suitable category
  • Value focus: beach villa plus a full-board or all-inclusive plan

Finally, atmosphere and scale

Resort size is a reliable proxy for atmosphere: under about 60 villas feels quiet and intimate, over about 120 feels social and busier with more facilities.

Verify before you book

Confirm transfer times, villa inclusions and meal-plan coverage directly with the resort before paying.

iLivaro records facts against dated sources and shows when each was last verified, but resorts change operations. The resort's own confirmation is the final word.

Frequently asked questions

How many resorts should be on a shortlist?
Three to five is usually enough to compare meaningfully. Beyond that, the differences stop being decision-relevant.
Does iLivaro take commission for rankings?
No. Commercial relationships do not affect organic ordering or matching results.
